Planned To Perfection

Whether you simply want some guidance or you need a professional to handle your entire wedding, choosing the perfect planner or stylist will ensure you get the day you deserve. René Hart speaks with Dawn Jackson, the founder of Luxx Weddings & Events, about the ins and outs of the wedding planning and event styling industry.

Awedding planner or stylist can help you define the look, style, mood and emotion you want to create for your wedding day. They’ll be familiar with the latest trends and be inspired by brides, suppliers and the industry itself. The two roles may seem similar, but Jackson says it’s rare to find someone who specialises in both.

“A wedding planner’s role is dissimilar to that of an event stylist,” she says. “Couples seeking to engage the services of a wedding planner [should choose] one who can see their vision, match their personalities and meet their budget and expectations, [as well as] liaise with various vendors in ensuring a timely and well-coordinated schedule [runs] on their event day.”

“An event stylist takes on the form of various elements, honing in on our five senses such as sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. Your stylist should be competent with their ability to truly share your vision and replicate it in a creative manner through floral designs, centrepieces on guest tables and styling of your bridal table, [as well as the] gift and cake tables at your reception.”

Although finding someone with both wedding planning and styling experience may seem uncommon, Jackson offers her clients both. With just one and a half years of experience in the industry, Luxx Weddings & Events has been awarded a number of accolades, and is quickly turning into a wedding styling/planning pioneer.

Wedding Whisperer

Jackson believes investing in the right wedding planner can help you save money, time and stress. They will offer valuable advice and support, which means you can focus on other important aspects of your big day. For Jackson, it’s important to take the time to get to know a bride and groom, not only as individuals but also as a couple, and to allow them to get to know her.

“Your wedding planner works for you and, as such, will – and should – perform their roles in your best interest,” she says. “A wedding is an important day, if not the most important day in the couple’s lives, which they are entrusting their wedding planner [and] stylist [to create] the most amazing memories. Whatever [their vision] may be, a professional wedding planner and stylist should always endeavour to genuinely feel the depth of what their clients expect of their wedding.”

When it comes to establishing a relationship with a couple, Jackson says the initial meeting is essential, because it’ll give you an idea of their style and vision for your wedding.

“It all begins with an initial bridal consultation,” she says. “[I’ll ask] the couple to share both their visions, encourage the flow of ideas, update [the] progress of tasks on my to-do list, schedule meetings for the couple and maintain constant contact and professionalism from day one, [all the way] through to their wedding day.”

A Personal Touch

When working with her clients, Jackson ensures to inject as much of a couple’s personality into their wedding day. However, she has noticed that couples are also choosing to get creative when it comes to incorporating personal touches.

“Brides and grooms alike are constantly seeking new ways to give their guests a unique experience, and the best way to achieve that is by incorporating their own personalities into the event itself,” she says. “After all, no two couples are the same.”

“Utilising the menu to customise a wedding is one of the most effective and easiest ways to blend a couple’s tastes. Dessert is another great place to showcase the couple’s personalities. A multi- flavoured cake filled with the couple’s favourite flavours, such as chocolate and strawberry or lemon and red velvet, never fails to add a whimsical touch.

“Another popular option among brides is to add a personal item to their bouquet to keep close to them as they walk down the aisle. It can be anything from a late relative’s cherished brooch to the earrings her mother wore on her own wedding day, which is a simple way to personalise the moment. Regardless of the theme, price or the design of a wedding, it will certainly be made more meaningful and memorable with the couple’s unique touch incorporated in their celebrations.”

Perfect Planner

It’s daunting to know how many suppliers are out there, as well as how many people it takes to make a wedding a success, so knowing who to trust can be difficult. At the end of the day, you’re hiring someone to plan your perfect event, so you need to ensure you’ll be in good hands.

“Planning a wedding involves making countless decisions, which can be daunting for couples [who may be planning] such a huge event,” says Jackson. “The right wedding planner can help couples [to] refine their ideas, connect them to the appropriate vendors, advise them on proper etiquette and suggest ways to use their budgets wisely.”

“Besides keeping their schedule on track, a planner will also create a wedding day timeline [and make] sure that it gets executed, right down to the smallest detail. A good planner will analyse what couples are looking to achieve, help them find all the resources to get it done and guide them through every step of the way. With the right person to take care of the logistics, couples will be free to focus solely on enjoying themselves.”

Similarly, the right wedding stylist will know exactly how to transform your dream wedding into a beautiful reality.

“Finding the right stylist is just as important,” says Jackson. “The right stylist will ensure a couple’s theme and designs are recreated according to [their] vision... so [they] can confidently walk into the room with everything just as they had imagined.”

Once you find the right wedding planner, as well as the perfect stylist, the rest of your planning will come together perfectly, as they’ll recommend suppliers they’ve worked with and know how to get the best prices and the best results. Take some stressful weight off your shoulders and consider hiring a trusted wedding planner or stylist to help make the difficult decisions, so you and your groom-to-be can have the wedding of your dreams!
