Rewriting The Recipe
The wedding cake has long been a symbol of tradition – a white, towering showpiece ceremonially cut and shared by the couple as their first sweet taste of married life. But today’s couples are moving beyond their mother’s wedding cake, opting instead for desserts that reflect their personality, love story and modern trends. Western Australia Wedding & Bride’s Hannah McDonald speaks with Lyn Meyers, owner and manager of My Delicious Cakes & Decorating Supplies, about the sweet revolution – where cakes can be tiered, textured or totally unexpected.

Lyn is a seasoned wedding cake artisan with more than two decades of experience perfecting the art of frosting tiers and piping elegant rosettes. Through her business, My Delicious Cakes & Decorating Supplies, she not only creates bespoke cakes for all occasions but also supplies tools and ingredients for home bakers and hosts hands-on decorating classes – equipping beginners with the skills and confidence to craft their own edible masterpieces.
But Lyn’s expertise extends beyond the technical skills of cake production. With her level of experience in the industry, she’s witnessed firsthand how wedding cake styles have evolved – from classic white tiers to bold, personalised creations. “After twenty years of business, I’ve seen that wedding cake designs have changed,” she says. Essentially, tradition is giving way to innovation, with couples now seeking cakes that reflect the times, as well as their individual stories, tastes and aesthetics.
Trend Check
When it comes to styles and forms, Lyn has her finger on the pulse of wedding cake trends, regularly creating custom orders for any and all couples. “The vintage style piping is back,” she announces. “Couples have changed from a fondant covered iced cake to more of a butter iced cake.” As preferences evolve, many couples are trading in the traditional whole cake for cupcakes or alternative desserts. Yet for those who remain loyal to tradition, the timeless stacked-tier cake still reigns supreme.
In terms of decorations and flavours, Lyn has observed a shift towards edible flowers utilised as a finish – to incorporate more texture, and at times, colour to the overall design. Flavour trends have evolved over time, but there’s still something for everyone – whether you love bold tastes or prefer something more subtle. “Red velvet is a big hit at the moment, or towards the lighter end is an elderflower and lemon flavour that is very popular,” she observes. However, the most overarching trend noted by Lyn is the couple’s desire for a cake that uniquely speaks to them as people. “We still find that many cakes are somewhat traditional but with a twist provided by their personalities,” she remarks.
Bake It New
While sticking to contemporary trends helps your cake feel modern, Lyn identifies some fresh ideas to keep your post-nuptial sweet treat on the cutting edge. As for cake decorations, Lyn suggests “custom toppers, rice paper sails, or piped flowers to give elegance to the cake design.” These finishes can represent sentimental touches – from shared hobbies and cultural symbols to subtle nods to personal journeys.
For some couples, the cake becomes a canvas – with hand-painted or illustrated designs turning dessert into edible art. “We do get this request from time to time, but these kinds of cakes are time consuming and will cost more, which is something that needs to be factored in when organising a wedding,” she reminds. “This is where the edible images help to keep the costs down and still give the look the couple are after. Edible printing is a technique that gives very different dimensions to the cake but still holds the story of the couple,” she says.
Your Edible Love Story
Personalisation has become the key ingredient in many wedding cakes of today. Blending modern trends with personal details allows a wedding cake to feel both current and deeply meaningful – a reflection of the couple and their shared history. When asked if couples want cakes that reflect their personality and love stories, Lyn asks, “why have a cake that is like everyone else’s? This is the couple’s chance to share their story and their love to family and friends.”
Many couples are taking this opportunity, with small details incorporated into the cake that makes it truly theirs. “They ask for special little details on the back of the cake, specifically for their new life partner, or distinct colours, or flowers that represent their stories so far in their relationship,” she says. Lyn’s passion is in translating this story into the most perfectly symbolic cake. “I love the fact we can help them show themselves. Our cakes are only ever what the couple wants, and we believe that every couple has their own design to reflect their story,” she argues.
One such example of this eventuated when a couple aimed for a very specific and personal cupcake tower – with different piped flowers on each cupcake. “Each flower represented something about either person or symbolised a special occasion that they shared. I thought this was beautiful, it gives a conversation piece to every person accepting their cupcake,” she reflects.
Ultimately, Lyn emphasises that your wedding cake should reflect who you are as a couple – so make sure it expresses exactly what you want it to. “Make the cake complement you and your partner, and your vision for how your day will celebrate the union,” she concludes.
