A Bride

Bejewelled

You’ve chosen the perfect wedding dress, and shoes to match, but no bridal ensemble is complete without a little bedazzlement. Here, Kirrily Ireland speaks with Umaima Daginawala, assistant manager and marketing assistant at Carmen Jewellers, and discovers how brides-to-be can best choose jewellery that complements their wedding day outfit.

From earrings and bracelets, to necklaces and rings in various metals and materials, your jewellery choices can help elevate your wedding-day look, taking it to new heights of jaw-dropping wonder. However, as every bride and their gown are different, there are a few things to consider before adorning yourself in a sparkling set.

Find Your Match

When a bride-to-be enters the store, Daginawala’s “biggest priority is finding a piece that makes them fall in love all over again”. It’s your big day, and you should be made to feel beautiful in every possible way, including the treasures that decorate your ears, neck and wrists. Visiting an experienced jeweller will make all the difference, since they can provide their expertise and assist in finding you a piece or set that flawlessly blends itself into the rest of what you plan on wearing.

“As less is always more for our bride, no piece should ever detract from another … every brides’ dress deserves jewellery that complements it rather than contrasts [it],” Daginawala advises. “For example, a low-neck [dress] would pair beautifully with a dainty long necklace or pendant, whereas a more modest, high [neckline] would be suited to no necklace, [which would] take away from the dress, but [rather] a pair of stunning earrings to focus on [instead].”

Once you’ve chosen the type and style of jewellery that flatters your bridal gown, you then need to decide on the right metals and tones, which can be determined by a few different factors. “As mentioned above, each piece should complement the bride’s dream dress, whether it be a lovely white gold diamond piece for a stunning white dress or a yellow gold set for an off-white dress or ethnic Indian couture,” Daginawala says. “Other than that, the main priority is to not overshadow the natural beauty of the glowing bride-to-be. So naturally, we would find jewellery that best suits the bride themselves, [often] to match their complexion, such as warm-toned skin best suiting more yellow and rose gold, and copper and brass jewellery, [or] neutral skin tones quite commonly suiting gold and white metals such as silver or platinum. But of course, [in the end] it is a simple matter of personal preference.”

If you can’t decide between glorious gold or striking silver, two-tone jewellery offers the best of both worlds. “Two-tone jewellery can easily be a hit or a miss, but when tailored to the dress well they can be a match made in heaven,” Daginawala says. “For a more classic and modern white gown with no patterns or texture, two-tone jewellery could complement it well using different metal finishes. However, if our bride leans towards a more texturized and patterned dress, simple polished two-tone jewellery may add just the right touch.”’

Since most of your jewellery will sit close to your neck and face, your choices should also be influenced by your hairstyle – whether you intend to wear it up or out, plain and simple, or curly and intricate. “Just like the textures or the style of the dress, the jewellery should complement [the hairstyle],” Daginawala notes. “More voluminous, ostentatious hair would best suit simple jewellery, while a simpler hairstyle could complement a nice single bold piece such as long drop earrings.”

Follow The Fads

“Whether it be something old, something new, something borrowed, or something blue, some bridal jewellery [styles] have certainly stood the test of time,” Daginawala says, paying homage to the traditional wedding rhyme. “One timeless way to show your [partner] how much you love them has always been showed off with a classic solitaire diamond engagement ring.”

However, traditional wedding jewellery has evolved over time, as ever-present inspiration sparks new trends, and there is nothing trendier than turning to ethically sourced goods. Daginawala observes that the up-and-coming modern solution to getting a big, stunning white rock is to turn to ethically and environmentally-friendly lab-grown diamonds. “These creations not only avoid many ethical issues of blood diamonds or deforestation in mining, but are also more efficient and [offer] the flexibility to get better quality for less, making it affordable too.” These diamonds have become increasingly popular with the modern bride, and it’s no wonder why.

Other trends have come about from ubiquitous wedding themes, catering to the decorations, settings and overall vibes of the wedding. With boho and rustic weddings being quite thematic, Daginawala suggests complementing them with “dainty and floral jewellery”.

Personalise Your Pendant

Straying from popular designs, brides-to-be can delve deeper to discover a wedding set that specially reflects their personality. There are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to colours, materials or jewellery styles.

“Firstly, breaking tradition from the classic diamond look with coloured stones is a big enough change for some, however, to truly add your own personalisation in a unique way, choosing the right gemstone with the attributes associated to match the bride’s personality is as personal as a piece of jewellery can get,” Daginawala says. “As an Australian however, you cannot go wrong with a natural Australian opal. Opals [produce a] multifaceted look from every different angle, each stone holding a uniqueness that no other stone could [achieve].”

If you’re determined to still have shiny diamonds incorporated into your jewellery but want something a little bit different, “why not combine diamond and gemstones to get coloured diamonds?” “In the jewellery industry, the rarity of different coloured diamonds has brought unique jewellery to a whole new level, as you can get a range of them including pink, yellow, blue, red, green, black and many more,” Daginawala explains.

Either way, whether you’re after dangly earrings covered in diamonds or something sophisticated and pearly to hang around your neck; are interested in following trends or seeking your own path, Daginawala’s main message is that less is always more. No matter which jewellery you settle on, let each piece speak for itself and make a subtle statement to dazzle your partner and guests.
