A Splash of

Colour

It’s a common story for style to fall victim to the homogenising effect of fashion. Breaking away from the stereotypical black tuxedo, there are now a range of vibrant and unique colours and clothing options to suit even the most daring of tastes. Here, Emma Warner Allen discusses the many ways that the modern groom can express himself and utilise colour on his wedding day.

When selecting a coloured suit for your wedding day, navigating issues such as seasonality, your wedding theme and bridal party theme can make incorporating a pop of colour an overwhelming task. While coloured suits may be considered a risk, they are an excellent option for the fashion-conscious groom who wishes to showcase their personal style on one of life’s most significant days.

Sartorial Seasonality

The tried and true look of tuxedos and suits has established these styles as timeless classics. Tuxedos and suits can act as an excellent foundation for savvy stylists to customise their garments in order to highlight a groom’s personality. Experimenting with colour, texture and different fabrics can add an additional dimension to what is otherwise a classic silhouette.

Allow seasonality and the wedding’s theme to act as your guide when experimenting with coloured suits. When selecting a coloured suit, it is best to choose season-appropriate colours. Autumn and winter may call for darker colours and heavier fabrics that reflect the moody weather such as shades of rich burgundy, striking emerald and opulent velvets, while spring and summer often boast lighter and brighter materials like delicate pastels and light linens, mirroring new life and warmer days.  Often the wedding’s theme will already account for the season but should it not, attempt instead to choose a suit that remains in a complementary colour family. While it is important to reflect your unique style and personality in your clothing choice, it is vital to consolidate both the theme and seasonality to ensure that you are making a statement for all the right reasons.

A Cut Above The Rest

If you are deviating from more traditional colour palettes and styles, it is imperative that your suit fits like a dream. When wearing a coloured suit, eyes will naturally gravitate towards you, therefore, it is of importance that your suit is properly tailored to fit you. Unless you are buying bespoke, make certain your suit has been tailored so that you can feel confident knowing you are looking your best on such a significant day.

Colour Me Beautiful

As Coco Chanel once said, “the best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you!” Therefore, before diving into colours, it is helpful to first consider your complexion. As a general rule, your complementary colours should make your figure appear the most flattering and youthful. Conversely, disharmonious colours will have the opposite effect and can negatively distort your facial features. Determining what shades suit your complexion is important to make sure you look impeccable and feel confident.

Determining what colours will complement your skin tone is simple. If your skin has pink undertones your skin tone is considered cool-toned, and colours with blue undertones will suit you best. Alternatively, if you have golden undertones your skin tone is known as warm-toned and yellow-based hues will be most flattering on you. Once you have determined your skin tone, consider your features to further refine your harmonious colours. As a rule, pair light features with deep hues and match dark features with softer hues to provide contrast and add depth. For example, if a groom has warm undertones and dark features, consider warm, muted tones such as burnished golds, dark greens, earthy reds and burnt oranges to enhance your natural features.

While some colours may be too vibrant and domineering, it may still be possible to incorporate elements into your outfit via intricate patterns and prints to masterfully create an outfit that showcases your complementary colours and personality, without appearing overbearing.

Fine Print

Bold prints and patterns create a subtle and understated effect and are an excellent way to add a splash of colour and depth to your outfit. Traditional suits are no strangers to styles such as the pinstripe or gingham check. Other patterns such as a floral suit have become increasingly popular and can be an excellent way to add an element of fun to your outfit without being overpowering.

Attentive Accessorising

When experimenting with colours and wearing bolder and brighter suits it can be all too easy for an outfit to be visually overwhelming. Accessories should be used to complement your colourful attire rather than compete with it. To prevent your outfit from becoming an aesthetic assault it is best to accessorise with restraint.

Neutral shades such as beige, tan and black are always safe options for ties, belts and shoes
and should be chosen based on which colour complements your suit the best. In contrast, groomsmen can be seamlessly incorporated into the theme by matching their accessories to the grooms’ chosen colour scheme. Bringing elements of fun and personality across the bridal party will
promote cohesion and a polished appearance overall.

Smooth As Silk

For men at the forefront of style, introducing texture to your attire can add visual interest outside of colour and pattern. Weight, warmth, texture and sustainability are all factors that can influence the groom’s decision when choosing a suitable material for their suit. Natural fibres such as wool, cotton, linen, silk, velvet and even cashmere are generally accepted as the best choices given their breathable nature. Ensuring you are comfortable and confident in your wedding attire is vital so that you can enjoy your special day.

Regardless of what attire or suit you choose to don on your wedding, there is an option to suit the taste and style of every groom – and ample opportunity to get your colour on. Considering your wedding’s theme, understanding your skin tones and adding interesting textures will leave you in an excellent position to look and feel your best.
