Bella Maree Music

Heartstring Symphony

Emotions are the heartbeat of a wedding. A continuous, echoed rhythm that reverberates throughout the venue, settling in the hearts of all in attendance. These heartbeats never ring as loud as during the ceremony. From the opening note of a sweet, personal song to the crescendo of the joyous pronunciation of marriage. Music, as always, is the only vehicle for such heightened emotion. Western Australia Wedding and Bride’s Hannah McDonald speaks with Bella Maree, performer, DJ, MC and owner of Bella Maree Music, to discuss how emotions affect her performance, her process for handling the moment and tips for couples looking for their perfect sound.

The Emotions

Live music is the perfect catalyst for emotion – it is deeply felt, exceptionally personal, and on your wedding day, it’s an embodiment of the bond you share with your forever person. “The couple has chosen a specific song that holds meaning for them – whether it’s tied to a memory, a shared experience, or simply how it makes them feel. As the musician, I learn and perform that song just for them, in that moment, for that memory,” Bella Maree describes. “It’s not just pressing play on a playlist – it’s a live, heartfelt performance tailored to their story.” There’s a beautiful responsibility in creating this moment through music, and it’s an honour she acknowledges every time the ceremony begins, and she readies herself to sing.

The intimate and tranquil nature of a ceremony completely changes the energy of the music, accentuating the emotional resonance of the chosen song. “The ceremony is often quiet, still and emotionally charged. Every note feels amplified by the silence – you can feel the emotion in the air. It’s not just background music; it’s the soundtrack to one of the most meaningful moments in someone’s life,” Bella Maree exclaims.

This heightened emotion is often beneficial – when Bella Maree channels it, it enhances her performance and deepens the connection with everyone involved. She recounts, “sometimes I’ll see a groom holding back tears or catch the bride’s expression as she walks down the aisle, and it just hits me. I’ve teared up while singing more than once. But I think that shared emotion is part of the magic, it shows that I’m not just performing; I’m feeling it too. And I think couples can really sense that.” Although emotion is often the missing ingredient to truly transport listeners, it can also be an additional aspect that needs to be acknowledged in the artist’s process.

The Process

Bella Maree, even with her depth of experience, accounts for this level of emotion through rigorous preparation. “I always take time to ground myself before the ceremony. I run through vocal warm ups quietly, but just as importantly, I take a moment to reflect on the couple – their story, the song they’ve chosen and what this moment means for them. I centre myself emotionally so I can fully show up, calm and present, and pour that into the performance. It’s about more than just singing well; it’s about being attuned to the energy of the room,” she specifies.

In Bella Maree’s mind, this is vital for delivering a performance that is not only technically sound but adjusts to capture the essence of the day. “I pay close attention to the moment unfolding around me: the pace of the aisle walk, the energy in the space, how everyone’s feeling. Sometimes I’ll adjust how I sing something in real time to honour that. It’s all about being present and letting the song carry the weight of the moment in the most heartfelt way possible,” she asserts.

Choosing the right music for a wedding can feel overwhelming, which is why many couples turn to Bella Maree for her expert guidance throughout the process. She recounts that “most couples already have a few songs in mind that are meaningful to them, but they often come to me unsure of what fits best where – like what song suits the aisle walk, signing or exit. That’s where I step in and help guide the flow. I give them examples of what’s worked beautifully in the past, but ultimately, I encourage them to choose songs that truly reflect their story.”

Notes From Experience

With a wealth of knowledge and experience, Bella Maree offers nuggets of wisdom when it comes to song choice. “Don’t feel pressured to pick what’s popular or traditional. Think about songs that make you feel something – songs that remind you of each other or a special time in your relationship. And if you’re stuck, I’m always happy to guide you. Start with how you want the moment to feel, and we’ll build from there.” Bella Maree offers a much-needed reminder for those in the process of pondering the perfect melodies. “Your wedding music is more than a playlist – it’s a soundtrack to your love story. When it’s performed live, just for you, in that moment, it becomes a memory you’ll never forget. If you’re looking for something personal, heartfelt, and uniquely you – that’s what I’m here for,” she assures.
