Living In A Grecian Dream

It’s a joyous and exciting day for most brides when they’ve decided on their wedding dress. All that searching finally seems worth it once you have the dress ready for the ceremony. A wedding dress can be a big statement and reflection of the bride’s sense of style as well as the overall vibe of the wedding. The traditional weddings demand billowing ballgowns or sleek mermaid silhouettes – but what if you aren’t into the theatrics of a traditional wedding? What if, instead, you wanted to have something a little more unconventional and relaxed? You don’t necessarily want to undermine the importance of the occasion, but the black-and-white tuxedos and the prim and proper princess look just isn’t your style. Well, you may find your prayers answered. Editor of Western Australia Wedding & Bride, Robin Harper, sits down with the owner of Zolotas Australia Bridal Couture, Sophie Linardopoulos, to chat about her gorgeous boho-styled wedding dresses and the uniqueness they bring to the wedding industry.

Every once in a while, a new contender enters the fashion scene to shake things up. In Australia, there was a hunger for alternative wedding dresses that needed addressing – and Linardopoulos answered. She saw that demand in the industry and knew she could make a lasting impact. Originally launching in Athens in 1972, Linardopoulos embarked on the momentous venture of bringing Zolotas to Australia. She has managed Zolotas Australia Bridal Couture in Perth for seven years this year, making it her personal mission to bring Australian brides unique and stylish wedding dresses. The Zolotas Look

As these dresses are very distinct in their own right, it’s only fair to first explain what exactly a Zolotas dress is and the kind of bride it’s designed for. According to Linardopoulos, “Our bohemian and vintage dresses often have loose and flowing silhouettes that allow for easy movement and a sense of freedom.” When it comes to her dresses, you can expect certain features to be present: “Our boho dresses are made from lightweight, breathable fabrics such as cotton crochet lace, or soft silk … A-line, empire waist are popular choices, with layered skirts or bell sleeves adding to the bohemian aesthetic.”

Taking inspiration from other cultures such as Greece, Zolotas Australia Bridal Couture bring an edge to their wedding dresses that really set themselves apart. Instead of catering to the traditional weddings – which often adhere to strict conventions – these wedding dresses aim for something different. “Zolotas Bridal wedding dresses often feature loose and flowing silhouettes. They are less structured and more relaxed compared to traditional wedding dresses, which often have fitted bodices and structured skirts. Zolotas Bridal often showcases unique and unconventional necklines such as off-the-shoulder, halter or deep V-necklines.” Linardopoulos adds, “Zolotas Bridal also feature bell or flutter sleeves, adding to the bohemian vibe. Traditional wedding dresses, in contrast, typically feature classic necklines like sweetheart or scoop necklines and may have longer sleeves or are sleeveless.

While her dresses go against the grain in terms of style and design, you’re still spoiled for choice in terms of diversity. If you’ve got a vision in mind, a Zolotas dress may just be the perfect pick for you!

Elegant And Inspired

At a glance it’s clear that a lot of time, work and creativity goes towards these dresses and the inspiration behind them. When it comes to what inspires and fuels the creativity behind Zolotas dresses, Linardopoulos reveals all: “Monitoring runway shows, fashion magazines and industry blogs can provide ideas for unique designs, innovative details and fresh approaches to bridal fashion.”

For what inspires her personally, Linardopoulos says that her Greek background helps keep the creativity flowing. “Drawing inspiration from diverse cultures and traditions can lead to captivating bridal designs. Incorporating elements of different ethnic styles, traditional garments or symbolic motifs can create visually stunning and culturally significant bridal fashion.” Additionally, Linardopoulos loves collaborating with a diverse range of artists, from photographers all the way to event planners to generate new ideas.

A Different Kind Of Wedding Dress

One of the issues many brides face is the reusability of their wedding dress. Most of the time, the dress is relegated to the back of the closet to be forgotten or given away. The beauty of a Zolotas bridal dress is that, because of their unconventional aesthetic, they have the luxury of being repurposed after the wedding ceremony has concluded. Linardopoulos can think of three other purposes that her dresses could be reused for: your anniversary, formal events and Melbourne Cup events. “For milestone wedding anniversaries or vow renewal ceremonies, wearing the wedding dress again can be a sentimental and symbolic choice,” she says. As for formal events, “such as galas, charity balls or
red carpets events … a wedding dress can make a bold and unique statement at these occasions,” according to Linardopoulos.

At this point you may be wondering how you could accessorise with this style of dress. Not to worry! Linardopoulos has you covered: “Choose jewellery that complements the neckline and style of the dress. Delicate pendant necklaces, statement earrings or a simple bracelet can add sparkle and elegance. Consider the dress’s details and choose accessories that harmonise with its aesthetic,” she says. As for shoes, she says to “consider the length and style of the dress when choosing shows … Comfort is key, so ensure that your chosen shoes are suitable for a day
of celebration.”

If you’ve read thus far and are sold on the idea of a Zolotas dress, Linardopoulos has two words for you: open-mindedness and confidence. “Opting for an alternative, unique wedding dress is a reflection of their personal style and will make their special day truly unique and memorable,” she advises.
