Setting The
Stage
Your wedding day is an opportunity to express you and your partner’s personality, and what better way to do that than to create a visual statement with unique props and decorations that your guests will long remember. Here, Kirrily Ireland consults Karen Schmidt, creative director of Acara Styling & Co., to get the low-down on styling your very own bespoke wedding.

Ask An Expert
When it comes to planning a wedding, there’s no end to the list of tasks and demands to ensure the day is perfect – from sifting through endless styling options, to decorating your venue and working out the most effective way to arrange your props and hire items. Luckily, there is a simple solution which Schmidt recommends to make the planning process easier. “When dealing with stressful situations such as the setting up and budgeting process, I suggest bringing in an event manager as they will be able to put your mind at ease and work within your budget,” she explains.
An event manager will take away any confusion or overwhelming feelings that come with organising your wedding, while bringing their expertise to ensure everything is executed smoothly and looks just the way you want it to, as their “main priority is assisting the bride and groom to bring their vision to life”.
Most event managers will have a clear process, arranging consultations and keeping you in the loop every step of the way, which is vital for easing the couple’s stress or concerns in the wedding lead up. “I listen to [the couple’s] ideas and create a concept based on their input,” Schmidt explains. “I always try and allocate responsibilities to the groom as well as the bride so that he is comfortable with his involvement in the wedding. After getting to know the couple I assist with personalising their wedding to ensure it reflects them.”
“Personal styling consultations tailored to your special event are followed by a concept development,” the expert continues. “We visually present a breakdown of all elements in relation to your event and keep the client up to date with regular communication throughout the planning process. Acara Styling & Co. will manage the set up and coordination of your complete event including decorative styling and on-the-day event management … liaising between the venue, suppliers and the client, creating a stress-free and enjoyable experience.”
A Theme Come True
Whether you decide to get professional input or do it on your own, styling your wedding is much easier once you’ve settled on a theme. The important thing to note is that your wedding theme can be whatever you want it to be – rustic or romantic, beachy or woodsy, full of pretty pinks or bursting with bright blues. “I enjoy my line of work because I can style various weddings that consist of various themes,” Schmidt says. “I love that every wedding is different, and every day is different.”
Having a theme will help inspire the focal point, around which every other decorative item can work, such as an arbour covered in a specific floral arrangement that might influence some floral centrepieces for the tables. A theme gives direction and makes sure “that all items are cohesive in their colour, [and also ensures that] the decorative items placed on each hire item are all consistent in styling”.
Place And Price
The venue and, of course, your budget will also affect the types of props, adornments and other items you end up hiring to personalise your space. The location will be a huge factor in terms of what will and won’t be feasible within the allocated space. Schmidt says, “Location is important – when styling, it is important to factor in whether the wedding will be indoors or outdoors so that we can plan accordingly.” You’ll also have to consider whether certain props fit, and if there are logical places to put them. For instance, an arbour won’t be necessary if your ceremony location already has a dedicated aisle and archway, but is the perfect solution to bring life into an empty space.
If you need to draw the purse strings a little, the venue can even help save money in the styling department. Schmidt encourages couples to “try and use pieces from the venue that are included and then hire pieces that will collaborate well”. “I would [also] advise that they factor in all costs and brainstorm to make sure they have a clear vision
so that they can factor in everything they want within their budget,” she says.
Planning a budget-friendly wedding doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice everything you want. Schmidt affirms that “the finer details make a wedding come together” and instead encourages the couples that she works alongside to include the unique pieces that are symbolic to the bride and groom as people.
A Reflection Of You
Your wedding day is all about you and partner, so don’t be afraid to let your quirky qualities and particular tastes show. “It is important when styling a wedding that the event is unique to the bride and groom and the wedding reflects who they are as a couple,” Schmidt says. “During my initial consultation I communicate that the wedding should reflect the bride and groom both as individuals and as a couple.”
Personalisation can be as simple as including flowers that have a significant meaning to you, or incorporating your favourite colours. Event hire companies often have the option to personalise decorations, including balloons, signage and other pieces. “Personalised signage, props and decorative items are all available [at Acara Styling & Co.],” Schmidt says. “Many of our hire products can be customised within themselves as they have interchangeable tops that create a different style. We aim to maintain a range of hire products to suit all themes and occasions.”
Even if you’re planning on a simple, laid-back wedding, adding a personal touch can be as easy as including a few flowers that have a significant meaning to you, or incorporating your favourite colours somewhere on the day, because just as the close family and friends who surround you on your wedding day are familiar and welcoming, your environment should be too, and the right props and decorations can help achieve the bespoke wedding bliss you crave.
