Sticking To The Theme
Your wedding day should be all about you and your partner. From the venue, all the way down to the catering and décor, your wedding should perfectly emanate the love and strength between you and your partner. A themed wedding is a fun and exciting way to express both your personalities and really integrate your character into your big day. Aoife Butler from Western Australia Wedding + Bride magazine sits down to discuss themed weddings and everything that goes into the planning and styling of your big day with the owner and events director of Little Things Events, Kiera Treloar.

From countryside-chic to vintage glam and beachside celebrations, themed weddings vary in all styles and are crafted to suit the individuality of the couple. Whether you are looking to go all out or simply add some fun décor that encompasses you and your partner, couples can really get creative with themed weddings. While the process of planning your wedding day is as thrilling as it sounds, it may be overwhelming for some. This is where businesses like Little Things Events step in to make the process of planning and styling your themed spectacle simple and stress-free.
In Style
As owner and events director of Little Thing Events, Treloar has seen everything from video game-themed weddings to modern day glam. Having worked in events for over ten years, Treloar has now decided to work exclusively on the types of events in which she is most passionate about – “the heart-focused events celebrating life’s biggest milestones.” Catering for up to fifty weddings a year, Treloar lives and breathes all things design and takes pride in her sharp organisational skills. With an excellent team of planners and stylists, Little Things Events are the wedding planning specialists.
It is both the small and big details of a themed wedding that make your day so incredibly special. Treloar loves when “couples really lean into what makes them unique and what they love”. Every year trends change and evolve, and we see new themes take the forefront of the wedding industry. When creating the tone for your special day, Treloar ensures that couples and their guests receive that ‘wow’ moment. At the minute, she is working on an incredibly unique video game-themed wedding. Treloar says that this is one of the most interesting briefs they are working on and are “really pulling out a lot of the colours and the ethereal vibe from that game to put their day together. Briefs like that are fun to work on because its really different and unique, and we’re able to play a little bit with what we bring in so that the couple and their guests get that ‘oh wow’ moment when they see it.”
Everything from lavish celebrations in a glamorous setting to a close-knit rustic vineyard reception, themed weddings are designed to suit the couple’s requirements and desires. Treloar expands on this by stating that these themes “change every year, as we see different popular styles come and go, which is one of the things I love about weddings – no two are ever the same!” By getting creative and opting for a themed wedding, couples are already differentiating their special day from the rest.
Be Our Guest
Once your theme is decided, the excitement truly begins. The process of planning a wedding can be a tiresome and stressful process; however, with a wedding planner by your side, the process is instantly made easier. After getting to know her clients, their likes and dislikes and getting familiar with any of their special requirements, Treloar begins the detailed planning process. After the initial first meeting, Treloar says that “we spend time putting together their budget, design board and their supplier dream team, and meet back up to basically present back the overall wedding concept and make sure they’re happy with the direction we’re moving in”.
After finalising the main wedding concept, Treloar begins to lock in suppliers and settles on the remaining design elements. The couple is continuously updated and thoroughly involved in the planning process throughout every stage. Rest assured; your special day is in good hands!
Closer to the date, Treloar says that they are “very hands on with firming up RSVP’s and communicating guest numbers to suppliers, getting the on-the-day stationary designed and produced and finalising run timings and floorplans.” Essentially, the key role of a wedding planner’s job is, according to Treloar, “being that central cog in the wheel… so that the wedding week and day go absolutely seamlessly.” Just think of her as your very own wedding fairy godmother!
Your Dream Theme
In terms of styling your wedding, Treloar says that her company is “really driven by the couple – after all it’s about you not us, and the main thing is that you love the day.” When it comes to planning your wedding day, no matter how extravagant or simply romantic, the venue plays an important role in setting the tone. Wedding stylists aim to complement your venue and Treloar states that “what we look at with all weddings though is where you can make the most impact. Creating that ‘wow’ moment can often be from one or two key elements that really bring it all together, so for us it’s about finding out what is really going to create that moment for each couple in each venue.”
Couples can get as quirky as possible with regards to their chosen theme, as after all, your wedding day is about you and your partner. The ability to hire a wedding planner and stylist to help see out your creative vision is a fabulous addition to the wedding industry. Here to “define and shape your vision”, Treloar’s main piece of advice for couples looking to opt for a themed wedding and in hiring a wedding planner and stylist, is to do your research. “Your planner is going to be working closely with you for quite a few months… so it’s important that you’ve got someone there that you can trust and a team that you like and get on with”, says Treloar.
