Stripping Back The Paint
As we watch fashion trends change and evolve over time, so do we witness the rise and fall of various makeup looks. Recently, the ‘no-makeup makeup’ finish has been the star of the show, with celebrities and the public alike opting for that ‘lit from within’ look. This has been reflected in the modern bride as well, as more and more brides are aiming for glowing and natural-looking makeup to grace the aisle. Eager to unlock the secrets to this stunning finish, Bridget Armitage of Western Australia Wedding & Bride chats to Georgia Bevan, owner of Total Brides Hair & Makeup, to discuss all things wedding makeup and the key to perfecting a natural look.

With a lifelong passion for art, it’s no surprise that Bevan found her calling in the beauty industry. “I feel like makeup is just another form of art,” she explains. The talented businessowner combines her love for connecting to and meeting new people with her keen eye for makeup and hair, providing brides across the Perth metro area with gorgeous looks for their big day. “There is nothing better than being able to make someone feel confident and happy in their own skin!” she says. Bevan’s hands-on knowledge and experience have seen her perfect many different bridal looks in her time, making her an excellent guide through the process of a natural makeup finish.
The Natural Difference
The glowing, natural makeup look has risen almost as a countermovement to the dramatic brows, winged liner and matte lips of the 2010s. “Ever since the likes of Meghan Markle and more recently, Sofia Richie, we are definitely seeing more people opting for more of a ‘no-makeup makeup’ look,” notes Bevan, “and honestly, I am here for it!” Bevan breaks down the look into two key features. First and foremost: the skin. “We want the skin to look perfected, but as natural as possible. We want it to look hydrated and healthy,” she says. The second feature is the eyes. “All brides want their eyes to be a feature on their wedding day, but when achieving a ‘no-makeup makeup’ look, we don’t want to it to be too heavy-handed,” explains Bevan. “On my natural girls, I love to keep the eyes fresh and bright and just use some individual lashes to really open up the eyes and make them pop!” she says.
Bevan herself has a real love for creating these natural makeup looks. “My personal opinion – obsessed!” she says. “Natural makeup is totally my style, which is why I believe I am so well suited to bridal makeup. I think everybody wants to look like themselves on their wedding day, just the best version possible,” she explains. Bevan believes that this trend allows for a look that highlights your best features in a timeless and elegant manner, creating a finish that is stunning and showstopping yet appearing effortless and natural.
Get The Glow
If you’re keen to incorporate this finish into your big day, you may be wondering how to achieve it. Luckily, Bevan has all the insight. In her opinion, the key to a stunning, natural glow comes from a good skincare routine. “Having hydrated skin is so important. We recommend our brides look after their skin in the months and weeks leading up to the wedding,” she says. The day before the wedding, Bevan also asks her brides to do a light exfoliant and a heavy moisturise, followed by a cleanse and another heavy moisturise on the morning of the wedding. “We need that skin extra hydrated and plump. We can use products to control oil, but we can’t rehydrate your skin within the hour we have you in the chair,” she notes.
When it comes to creating the look, Bevan prefers using cream products for this type of finish. “I find they really blend and melt into the skin, rather than just looking like a product that sits on top. They also give a radiant finish, which looks more natural compared to a matte powder product,” she explains. This could look like cream blushes and highlighters, blending into a dewy foundation.
Tricks Of The Trade
Bevan’s passion for working with brides sings through with every client she takes on. “Weddings are incredibly special days. It’s such a privilege to me and so rewarding to be a part of making someone feel like the most beautiful version of themselves on such an important occasion,” she says. Her experience in the industry allows her to pass on some words of wisdom. “Once the day arrives, enjoy it! We know that you have spent months planning, but as hard as it may be, don’t let any hiccups ruin your day,” she advises.
When searching for a makeup artist, Bevan implores all brides to do their research. “Find a stylist who creates work that you love and reflects the style that you are after. If you want a full glam look for your wedding, find stylists who are posting full glam makeup on their page,” she says. “Instagram is a great place to have a look, as lots of artists are constantly uploading their most recent work on the platform,” she notes. Now that you have all the know-how straight from the source, go forth and find yourself in a wedding day look that truly captures your inner self.
